Chapter Nine

She should have put a stop to it. She should have told him no and shut him down, because if JoJo knew anything about Hugo Carter, it was that he began a thing as he meant to go on. She shouldn’t have been surprised, then, when he strolled into the kitchen the next morning, helped himself to a slice of apple, winked at Mary Sofia and casually planted a kiss on JoJo’s lips as she stirred eggs in the skillet.

With his sisters goggling at him, he dusted his hands and glanced around, asking innocently. “Has anyone set the table yet? If not, I’ll do it.”

“We’re taking care of it,” Mary Sofia, who had been taking drinking glasses from the dishwasher and passing them to her sisters, answered carefully, switching her eyes between him, JoJo.

He turned to the refrigerator. “Okay. Any juice?”

“J-just coffee and milk,” JoJo managed.

“Coffee it is.” He took down a mug from the cabinet and filled it. Leaning a hip against the counter, he inhaled the heady aroma of the dark brew before he sipped. “Should I start the toast?”

“Biscuits are in the oven,” Ana informed him quietly.

“Excellent.” Setting aside his coffee, he went back to the refrigerator, and this time he opened the door to take out the milk and butter. “I’ll just carry these through.”

The moment he left the room, the girls began a low, singsong taunt in unison.

“Oo-oo-oo.”

JoJo switched off the burner and whirled around, waving a wooden spoon and hissing at them, “Shush. Shush. Don’t make a big deal of it.”

Mary Sofia struck a pose, one hand at her waist, the other flung out, palm up. “Yeah, it’s not like we didn’t know something was up. From the start, they’ve been los padres en esta unidad familiar loca.”

The other girls giggled, setting off alarm bells in JoJo’s mind.

“What? What does that mean? What did she say?”

Grinning, Ana translated. “She said you and Hugo have been the parents in this crazy family unit from the start.”

“Oh. Well, it’s not that. It’s just…he’s your big brother and a Marine, and this is my house, so…”

“So,” Mary Sofia echoed. Then she puckered her lips and made a kissing sound.

JoJo’s face exploded with hot color, prompting Gabi to come quickly to her side.

“It’s all right. We like you. You’ve been very good to us, and we love Uncle Hugo. We’re very happy for him.”

“Yes,” Ana added pragmatically. “You’re a very nice lady, and this is a very nice house. We’d like to keep you both.” Mary Sofia poked her none to gently then, making Ana scowl. “What? You said it.”

“You’re not supposed to repeat everything you hear.”

“It was just a kiss,” JoJo hissed, keeping her voice low. “You’re making too much of it.”

Gabi shook her head solemnly. “I don’t think so.”

Feeling completely outmaneuvered, JoJo grabbed the skillet and marched toward the dining room. “Breakfast is getting cold.”

She could feel the sisters grinning at her back and hoped someone would remember to take the biscuits out of the oven before they burned.
